Nike Pegasus 40 Review: A Neutral Running Shoe for Coming Back After 40

Running · Published 11/13/2023 ·

It turned out to be my back all along.

The pull-and-ache in my ankle arches and heels, the muscle pain (well, nerve pain, really) on both sides of my knees — all of it.

I spent a good while in and out of clinics. I went to more than ten orthopedic offices and four Korean medicine clinics, getting focused treatment on whatever hurt.

Which makes sense, of course. If your knee hurts, you treat the knee. If your ankle hurts, you treat the ankle.

But the last orthopedist I saw had a different take.

“The cause of your knee and ankle pain isn’t either of those spots — it’s your back.”

He said the pain in my back was generating pain all over my body. The remedy: treat the back, plus stretching.

Tendons don’t stretch out overnight, so you have to lengthen the muscles through stretching to ease the pain and improve your range of motion.

Running and hiking I could ease back into slowly, alongside the treatment.

Hearing that I could start exercising again — something I’d all but given up on — made me so happy I nearly teared up.

So, in a good mood, I went ahead and ordered a neutral running shoe.

I still won’t be able to run long distances, but I figured I’d start slow with 3–10k.

I went looking for a running shoe that was as comfortable as possible, reasonably durable, and easy on the wallet at under 200,000 won.

The box is from a different product, so just focus on the shoes ^^

It’s the Pegasus 40. I paid 13,410 won as of November 2023. The design is unremarkable, and the sole isn’t especially thick. A plain, ordinary running shoe.

True to a running shoe, the toe box is slimly designed. The sole looks like it’ll hold up reasonably well for durability.

The design is just so-so, nothing special. After trying them on, I’d recommend going with your true size. I usually wear Nike sneakers in 275–280. For the Air Max 97, 275mm fits me just right.

Here’s the side profile. The sole rises higher toward the back.

The heel is built to minimize heel strike as much as possible.

To anyone glancing over, it just looks like a Nike shoe.

I took a close-up shot. I gave them a run and the breathability was excellent — enough that the top of my foot felt cool in this weather. Of course, your feet don’t actually get cold while running. Once you start running in socks, your feet heat right up. Even running in winter, it’s better to have that breathability.

Here’s the sole. There’s surely some special tech in there, but the design doesn’t go out of its way to show it off. No visible Air or carbon.

The part that hits the ground uses a different material for durability.

Nike’s stamped its name all over the place.

“There are no limits for human beings” — they’ve written something like that in here. I’d love to run a half marathon in these shoes.

The upper fabric is tightly, neatly woven.

This is the toe area — nicely glued together.

And lastly, the insole. With its 2–3 layer construction, I imagine your foot shifts up and down a bit as you run, which should help sweat wick away.

I fired up my Garmin watch to run for the first time in a while, but given my current condition it told me to do an easy run at a 7:00 pace for just 22 minutes, so I went out for about 3k.

Following the watch’s “advice,” it was genuinely tough. My weight has ballooned, and my body temperature just wouldn’t climb. My heart rate was hitting 191 ^^;;

But once I wrapped up, I felt so refreshed, and my body responded the very next day. The weather turned cold all of a sudden so I’ve had to pause for a bit, but as soon as it warms up a little, I think I’ll be looping around the lake park with some feel-good music in my ears.

Once you pass 40, exercising gets harder and harder. Aches start cropping up everywhere, and even eating the same amount, the weight piles on fast. I’m spending plenty of money trying to lose it. I want to sort out my routine and turn it into a habit so I can keep exercising.

This has been a review of a neutral running shoe that cushioned the impact well even for someone 83kg and 173cm tall.

Thank you.
