Brompton P Line Pedal Swap: A DIY Story After 2 Years
Gear · Published 6/14/2024 ·
All that hard work… two years on the stock pedals, and now they’re done for…
Every time I pushed down on a pedal, there’d be this clicking sound and a catching feeling. The pedaling also felt heavy, like I had to put in real torque to get it to turn over… The pedals on my 2022 P Line gave up the ghost after just two years.

So I bought a set of pedals with a really long name.

Time to swap the pedals out myself, DIY style…
Just remember this one thing: the left pedal tightens clockwise, and the right pedal tightens counterclockwise!
Do the opposite of that and they’ll come loose, right? It takes more force than you’d think. When tightening, you only need to snug them up — they’ll tighten themselves as you ride… But to get them off, you really have to put your back into it.

Getting them off was fine… putting the new ones on, not so much…
And it’s not because these are quick-release pedals… every pedal is made up of the pedal itself and the mounting part, and you need a really thin bicycle spanner to grip and turn that mounting part. The thing is, a regular spanner or an adjustable wrench won’t fit into the mount. That’s where I got really stuck.

I needed a thin spanner and didn’t have one… and honestly, it’s the kind of tool you’d rather not shell out money for.

It needs to be even thinner than the one in the photo…

Turns out the community service center (the local district office) is more on the residents’ side than you’d expect!
I headed over to the Sangam-dong community service center. I asked if I could borrow a bike tool for a moment, and they told me to go ask the General Affairs department on the second floor. So I folded up my Brompton, carried it up to the second floor, and they happily lent it to me. Ah… I was genuinely touched… I really only needed to tighten it once, and buying a tool just for that — whether it cost 100 won or 1,000 won — would’ve meant environmental waste, wasted money, and wasted time… And here’s another thing I learned… pretty much every community service center keeps tools for everyday tasks on hand to lend out.

Tightened up and feeling at peace…^^
It’ll depend on the shape of your pedals, but a thin spanner is a must for swapping them. You might also need a thick, long hex wrench. I used my Brompton toolkit and just muscled through it, but since they’re usually torqued down pretty hard, a longer tool makes them much easier to loosen.
This is my own-money, own-purchase pedal swap story.
Thanks for reading.
