2022 Brompton P Line: Carbon-Rail Saddle Swap Success

This is a 2022 Brompton P Line.
Early Brompton P Lines shipped with hardware that let you fit a lightweight wheelset and a carbon-rail saddle… but depending on the production year and model, some went out assembled with parts that didn’t support that. This was one of those cases.

So I ordered the right part, and it’s finally arrived.

I tried fitting it. It grips nicely. With a carbon-rail saddle, the rails aren’t round — they’re long and oval in cross-section. So if the clamp isn’t designed to support carbon rails, you simply can’t tighten it down at all.

Here’s the carbon-rail saddle with its long, oval-shaped rails. Compared to my old Specialized Comp saddle, it’s incredibly light. Chinese engineering really is something these days.

I went with a Brompton-compatible aftermarket part. With so many companies now making tri-fold bikes, the options keep widening. There’s really no need to pay up for genuine parts just to put one together.

Since the material is carbon, you do need to respect the torque spec. For the saddle, that’s 10nm.

The aftermarket part’s quality is good enough that you’d believe it was genuine.
I installed it, took it for a test ride, adjusted the saddle angle, and repeated that until I finally dialed in the right position. It’s a P Line kitted out as a daily rider, rear rack and all, so I’m not sure shaving weight means much here — but it’s definitely more than 100g lighter for sure.
This is the success story following my failed saddle swap last time.
