Cycling the Han River: Ilsan to Mapo on My Brompton
Cycling · Published 7/21/2023 ·
The rainy season just keeps dragging on, but the skies finally cleared up for the first time in a while. To everyone who’s taken damage here and there from the weather — I really hope you recover well.
I’ve been waging an all-out war against my ever-growing belly. Between an ankle injury and knee pain, my doctor’s verdict was that running is off the table, so I’ve decided to stop using running as my cardio. I’ll save the ankle and knee for the occasional hike or backpacking trip instead… From now on, cycling is my cardio of choice.
I did a round trip from Ilsan to Mapo, about 47km total. Took it nice and easy. For a minivelo, somewhere around 20km/h feels just about right.
In road bike terms, it feels more like 25km/h.

Snapped a shot at the entrance of the Sinpyeong rabbit-hole tunnel in Ilsan.

Down at the Mapo point, there was trash washed up and snagged all over the place, and the Han River water was still muddy brown.

Even so, the night view was as gorgeous as ever, welcoming me right in.

It had been a while since my last ride and I had a blast — and the road along the Han was cooler than I expected.
Thanks for reading.
