Jirisan Traverse Passbook: Collecting Shelter Stamps from Hwaeomsa to Cheonwangbong
Cycling · Published 12/20/2022 ·

A new way to enjoy our national parks…?
Stamp collecting is seriously fun.
To take on the Jirisan traverse, I picked up a traverse passbook.
And off I went ^^

It comes wrapped in a plastic cover.

It’s got the shelter contact numbers, too.

And here are the Jirisan courses.

I started out from Hwaeomsa Temple.
Stamp — bam!

This is the Nogodan shelter stamp. Each shelter’s stamp is designed in the shape of the shelter building itself.

This is over by the parking lot at the Nogodan entrance.

I made it all the way up to Nogodan at this hour of the early morning.

This is the trail from Nogodan toward Cheonwangbong.

And here’s the Yeonhacheon shelter.

The sun is slowly coming up.

Walk and walk and keep on walking, and eventually you reach the famous…

Samdobong peak.

Past Hwagaejae…

This is the Yeonhacheon shelter.
I cooked up some ramen here and then set off again.

This is Byeoksoryeong.

I had a quick bite at Byeoksoryeong as well.

This is the Seseok shelter.
I spent the night at Seseok.

A kind of entry pass, I suppose?
The Seseok shelter provides electricity for charging your phone.
You can also charge things like power banks.

The Jirisan traverse has plenty of pretty flowers like these, too.

This is the Jangteomok shelter.

I knocked out the stretch from Seseok to Jangteomok in one go.

The famous Jirisan summit marker.

I gave the Instagram-style shot a try, too.

Instead of heading to the Chibatmok shelter, I came back down to Jangteomok.

So Chibatmok is left blank here,

but I did get the stamp at the Jungsan-ri visitor center.
There are several courses, and if you start from Hwaeomsa and come down to Jungsan-ri, they give you a Jirisan traverse certification medal.
I got all the stamps, but I didn’t have the photos, so I couldn’t apply for the traverse medal ^^;;
Well, just collecting the stamps already feels pretty great.

That wraps up the Seong-Jung traverse, and I got the Hwaeomsa stamp separately.
Stitch the two GPX tracks together and you’ve got the full Seong-Jung traverse course.
For 2023, my goal is to finish the Hwa-Dae traverse in a single day ^^
I really want to go back… Jirisan, I miss you.
