Bike Commute from Ilsan Pungdong to Sangam DMC After a Week Off

A week ago, I hurt my back. I went straight to an orthopedic clinic and had some imaging done, and the result was… a degenerative disc. So it’s not like the pain came from a sudden injury — but the problem is, it hurts all the same. So I took a week off from cycling. I rode lightly yesterday and had no issues, so today I commuted by bike all the way from Pungdong in Ilsandong-gu to the DMC in Sangam-dong, Mapo-gu. Pungdong is in the middle of building Ilsan Elroi, so the bike lanes and sidewalks are all torn up by construction everywhere, and I had no choice but to go through the railroad crossing at Baengma Station.

The Baengma Station railroad crossing… aren’t they ever going to put it underground? A railroad crossing, still, in this day and age… You have to cross carefully. There was a fatal accident here a few years ago.

From there I followed the park path to Madu Station. The construction on the Madu Station underpass is finished too. The underpass space has been cut in half, and I’m genuinely curious who exactly the newly created space is for. Anyway, the underpasses that used to run on both sides have been merged into one, and half of that underground space has simply vanished.

After that, I passed the entrance ramp to the Second Freeway, entered the Han River bike path through the underpass tunnel, and came into Sangam-dong from the north end of Gayang Bridge. It was my first time using the bike path at the north end of Gayang Bridge. Because of the Third New Town construction next door, they’ve built and are now running an additional ramp for getting on and off at Gayang Bridge. For that reason, when entering the bike path from Sangam-dong, I’d recommend the Olympic Bridge bike path instead. There are just too many signals you have to wait at on the Gayang Bridge path.

For a bike commute after such a long break, the numbers came out pretty well. My average speed was over 20 km/h.

Everyone please ride safely, and have a happy weekend.

Thank you.
