Anguk to Ilsan by Brompton: A 48km Bike Commute Through Seoul

Cycling · Published 11/24/2022 ·

I set off from Anguk Station, my starting point.

Anguk Station (Changdeokgung) → Jongno 3-ga → Jongno 5-ga → Toegye-ro 5-ga → entrance to Namsan Park → Itaewon → Ichon → Mapo → Ilsan.

It’s not a short ride, and the stretch where you wind around the foot of Namsan can work up a bit of a sweat.

This is somewhere along Toegye-ro, or maybe Euljiro.

They’ve marked out the lane where you can cross the intersection on a bike.

A bike can’t follow the turn lane and make a left the way a car does.

A lot of people get this wrong. Bikes are only allowed to go straight.

So if you want to turn left, you just cross at the crosswalk twice. Safe riding always wins.

The entrance to Namsan Park. I was sweating so much that I took off the jacket I had on and strapped it to the rear rack.

Bungee cords are love ^^

Passing by Itaewon Station.

I’m riding past such a heartbreaking spot… I didn’t feel right taking any photos.

There are police on duty at the site…

I really think the nicest thing of all is when an accident is prevented before it ever happens.

When it comes to safety, there’s no such thing as too much.

I couldn’t be bothered with navigation, so I decided to just head straight to Noksapyeong and drop down from there.

If you ride along the wall of the U.S. military base on your left and keep going down, you’ll get straight to Seobinggo.

Okay, made it down. There’s a shortcut partway through that trims the distance a little, but on a Brompton, whether you loop around a bit or go a little farther, at some point you just stop caring about distance. Might as well take whichever route is comfortable.

Since I never got the post-delivery checkup done, I stopped by BB5 to have it looked over, then grabbed a meal and headed home.

The way home runs through a migratory bird sanctuary and mostly greenbelt area, so even if I take photos there, nothing really shows up.

Only once you reach the rabbit-hole underpass do you finally get a bit of lighting.

And just as I expected, they’ve torn out the rails that used to run along both sides and are leveling it all out.

That part is so much easier to use.

Looks like it’ll be wrapped up soon.

I’ve reached Goksan Station. Once you get this far, it really feels like you’re basically home.

Even though there’s still nearly 20 more minutes to go.. ^^;

The Garmin is great in every way, except every now and then it completely shatters your trust.

I don’t know if they don’t test it, or just don’t invest in the software…

As a user, this really shouldn’t happen… With Apple already out there putting the #AppleWatchUltra on the market, this is genuinely embarrassing.

48 kilometers total, 3 hours and 41 minutes of riding.

A really easygoing ride. I bumped into a buddy, we had dinner, and it turned into a nice, breezy commute home that doubled as a workout.

Commuting by bike is great because you get to bundle your workout and your trip home into one ^^
