Watch out for ankle ligament injuries from hiking and running
Any sport that involves walking or running can hurt you at any time.

When you run, an ankle injury can sneak up on you at any moment. I’ve got one myself — a left ankle injury and pain in my right knee. At first I figured the pain was just my age catching up with me. But when I went to the clinic, it turned out to be a grade 1 sprain. In other words, the ligament was damaged, inflammation set in, and that’s what’s been causing the pain. I’ve been in rehab for months now. The doctor told me this can happen no matter how well you stretch, and that it really doesn’t have much to do with age. The tricky part is the rehab.

Keep the ankle immobilized when you’re resting.
The right pain-relief patch can help you manage the pain.
To keep my ankle from twisting around on its own while I sleep, I strap it into a brace before bed. And depending on how much it hurts that day, I’ll sometimes add a pain patch on top. A patch isn’t an actual cure, but it works as a painkiller and seems to act on the surrounding muscles enough to make the next day’s movement a little smoother. The important thing is keeping the ankle immobilized.
You need to plan for a long recovery.
When I talked it over with my doctor, the answer was that it can drag on for years.
What scared me most was the idea of getting stuck like this for good. Now and then I’d get this snapping sensation, which was unnerving, but they told me it’ll be fine if I treat it properly, so I’m sticking with the treatment. Apparently it heals better than you’d expect, so please do visit a clinic near you. They say it sets in permanently if you leave it too long, so the moment the pain starts, make sure you talk to a doctor.
