Oseosan: Highest Peak in the Geumbuk Range & Backpacking Guide

오서산 (Oseosan)
At 790 meters, it’s the highest peak in the Geumbuk Range.
Crows and magpies have lived here in great numbers since long ago, which earned it the nickname “the crows’ nest.” And from the summit, you get a wide-open view of the West Sea coast, so it’s also been called “the lighthouse of the West Sea.” It’s close to Gwangcheon Station on the Janghang Line, which has made it a popular spot for railway hikers.

There are two starting points: the Cheongso-myeon Seongyeon Reservoir course and the Sangdam parking lot course.
You can also just grab a taxi from Gwangcheon Station to the Sangdam parking lot.
There’s a huge parking lot, so it’s a great mountain to drive to and then loop right back to your starting point after the hike.
On the course up from the Sangdam parking lot, there’s really nowhere to get drinking water, so you’ll want to bring your own beforehand.

I’ve hiked the entire Oseosan loop trail via the Sangdam parking lot course, and I’ve also been up to the summit for some backpacking.
Oseosan actually has two summit markers.
There are about two or three deck sites, and they’re really spacious, so it’s known as a popular mountain for backpacking.
The forest road runs all the way up to the midpoint and it’s in great shape, so gaining elevation early on is easy. Near the summit, though, there’s a bit of a steep, lung-busting stretch.
In autumn it’s famous for the silver grass that greets you in spectacular fashion.
Looking back at these photos after so long, it’s a mountain I’d love to climb again.
