Garmin Smartwatch Battery Life and Charging Tips

Gear · Published 12/17/2022 ·

A phone is the kind of device you have to charge once or twice a day.

Smartwatches like the Apple Watch are much the same — you’re charging them every day, or every other day at the most.

The single biggest advantage of a Garmin smartwatch is its absurdly long battery life.

It’ll easily last about two weeks on a charge.

And it even supports solar charging, so if you spend a lot of time outdoors? It lasts even longer.

Well, that’s what the manufacturer claims, anyway.

But it does need charging eventually.

The stock charging cable isn’t a standard one. It connects physically, and it uses 4 pins.

To get around that whole non-standard issue, I bought an adapter on AliExpress. One end is USB-C and the other is the 4-pin connector.

Just leave one of these adapters at the office and you’re all set.

You can charge it with your laptop charger like this.

Most PD chargers, and even phone chargers, charge it just fine.

As for charging, I do about 30–40 minutes once a week, or under 20 minutes a session if I charge twice a week.

Given how lithium batteries work, it’s better for longevity to cycle between 30–80% rather than charging to 100%, but honestly the battery lasts so long even with careless habits that I just charge it whenever’s convenient.

The third-party Garmin cable charges it just fine too ^^;;

Every now and then I’ll want to head straight out for a run or a night hike after work and log the track, but I’m not sure the battery will hold up — so having a charging adapter stashed at the office to top it off easily has been really handy.
