Brynje Super Thermo Base Layer: Why Mesh Keeps You Warm

Daily · Published 1/3/2023 ·

I’d been skipping my winter hikes for a while, but I’ve decided to get moving again.

A lot of my old gear has worn out or given up the ghost, so I picked up a few new pieces.

#BoughtItMyself — these came from okmall. A famous base layer, as you’d know — I bought two Brynje Super Thermo tops.

As everyone knows, this is what it looks like once you put it on. I’ve covered the important bits to protect your eyes.

As you can see, it’s a mesh-type material.

It’s a bit heavier than I expected, and there’s a lot of yarn packed into it.

When I poured water over it, it soaked the water up at an incredible rate. And it drains it just as well, too.

So then you wonder, how on earth does this keep you warm? But another word for keeping warm is insulation.

They say the best insulator of all the insulators on Earth is air.

If you trap air, the two sides won’t mix even when their temperatures differ.

Think of the double-pane windows on your veranda — these days they even make triple-pane glass.

They twist and spin the yarn to create thickness, then weave that together to build up more thickness.

Air can’t easily pass through a space that’s blocked on one side. If you’ve ever stood in a spot between buildings where the wind comes howling through,

you’ll know that just ducking behind a nearby pillar is enough to keep you out of the wind’s direct path.

That’s exactly it — turning direct exposure into indirect exposure. As for whether the exposed parts are oriented toward drying, I couldn’t tell you for sure.

After wearing it, I can say it’s genuinely warm, yet it doesn’t get soaked with sweat, so it stays comfortable.

Now I get why everyone keeps raving about Brynje. I’ve decided to buy a few more and rotate through them as I wear them.

Thanks to this, I should be able to go with a thinner outer jacket.
